Borehole Project

Updated April 2011

Many thanks to the Devon Peace Group who raised most of the money to drill the borehole the cost of which was £10,000

Total depth of borehole 96 meters.
Discharge water table 50m.

The borehole is capable of extracting 20000 litres per hour, but we should only extract 60% = 12000 litres per hour, which is plenty for the whole area including Bumala and Bukhakala Schools.

All equipment has now been purchased and installed, the three phase electricity has been connected to our borehole, so we now have disease free, fresh, clean water being pumped to the homestead and tree nursery. Until all piping has been laid to the schools and homes in Bumala, Peter Weyama has installed a tap at the borehole area for the local people to use, another tap has been installed by the tarmac road at the bottom of the farm compound, this is so more people and schools can come and take the water they need.

All of our projects depend on this water, the banana plantation on its own, needs 20litres of water per three suckers every week. The local school will be able to provide sanitation facilities for the children to wash their hands.

Water is being given freely to the local people, the Devon Peace Group are kindly paying for the cost of the electricity which is around £30 per month, a small charge is being made to the traders who came to purchase water to sell in the market, this charge will pay for the upkeep and maintenance of the water project. Our Noah's Ark Committee in Bumala monitor the water so it is not wasted, and the traders do not exploit it.

The Widows we support and committee members plant and irrigate the vegetables on the farm, some of the vegetables are given to our orphans the rest is sold giving them an income.

The total paid for this borehole project has been around £19,000 this included the cost of the drilling of the borehole, power house, header tank, pump, accessories, installation, and labour.

Thank you to all who have helped us achieve this fantastic project
