Reforestation Program
Local workers planting avocado and eucalyptus trees as part of the reforestation program on the mountain and surrounding areas.
We are growing the seedlings in our own tree nursery.
It is very important for the environment that we plant trees and shrubs to encourage wildlife back to the mountain, which has been destroyed due to the destruction of the trees in the area and the environmental changes.
Update July 2010
On our last visit to Bumala in March this year, we met the forestry commission who discussed with us the different shrubs and trees we could plant, they are willing to help us purchase the seeds to grow in our nursery and give us free advice and support.
Some of the preferred plants for re-forestation are:-
Acacia Senegal
Melia Volkensii
Croton
Eucalyptus (specific species)
We will need to fence off a large part of the area as cows are wandering on to the land and trampling the saplings that were planted over the last 2 years.
