School Fees and extras we pay:

Up until February this year, we didn’t have to pay for primary education, that has now changed, the government have told parents and guardians that all schooling has to be paid for, an impossible task for those with no income (as most of them are). So, many primary children will not be able to go to school.

We are in the process of getting a breakdown of school fees for each child, this is a time consuming task, but will eventually be accomplished.
All Schools charge different fees

For example:

Bukhakhala Primary School charge about £7 for the teacher’s fees per term (a lot of money when the average wage if able to work is £30 per month). Then, £1.50 for Guardians day at end of each term. This is without the cost of school uniform exam fees etc.
They have no sanitary washing facilities, and the children have to either go home at mid day to eat, or they have to bring something with them, no School dinners are provided. (a lot go without).

Masabula Primary School charges more Teachers fees the Bukhakhala, but have better sanitary facilities like hand washing with soap.
For example one pupils School fees were £80 last term as he is in the highest class, plus £1 exam fees then a separate amount for school uniform and books.

Bumala Secondary School pupils pay from £40 per term each child plus exam fees uniform etc.
Some of the schools buy the uniform themselves and send us the bill to pay.
The list of what we pay for besides school fees consist of the following:
  • Uniform
  • Special Lessons, Exam Fees
  • Books
  • Pens
  • Toiletries and underwear- bras, pants etc for boarding children
  • Hospital Fees
  • Special Diets
  • Guardian Fees at some schools
Unlike in England, Children can go to primary from any age, from 5-until 17 years.
So a child in class 3 could be 8 or 15 years old, often there is up to 80 children in a class, and they are taught together on ability not age.
Secondary School can be from about 14 - 20
